Absorption by the tile body measures how porous the fired clay is and how much water it can take up. Ceramic wall tiles use a clay body that is more porous than porcelain, which is fired to a denser, lower-porosity state. The typical absorption for a ceramic wall tile’s clay body falls in the mid single digits, around 7–9 percent. That’s why 7–9% is the best match. Values like 0–1% would indicate porcelain (very low porosity), while 15–20% or 25–30% would be unusually high porosity for standard wall tile.
